Our Story

Our beginnings...

Back in 2012, Mercelena Vasquez-Funk, one of the key founders of the IDEAS Club at the high school level and the IDEAS Alumni Association, attended a seminar at UCLA that open her eyes to a pressing challenge: many educators, community members and students themselves lacked the tools and knowledge to fully support students from underrepresented communities. Recognizing this need, Mercelena took action by creating IDEAS Club

What began as a small group of students meeting weekly soon grew into a vibrant space for learning, empowerment, and community. through field trips, guest speakers. and mentorship from professionals and alumni, students gained access to vital resources and a supportive network.

2024...

After pausing for nearly two years, the IDEAS Club returned with renewed energy and purpose to continue the work it started back in 2012. Under the guidance of Mercelena Vasquez-Funk, once again serving as advisor, the club is actively engaging studetns and carrying forward its mission: support immigrant students to get to higher education.

Many of the original members who joined IDEAS back in 2012 and the following years have since graduated from college, and are now part of the IDEAS Alumni Association

Today...

Just in 2024, and after an alumni reunion celebration with many of the students who first joined IDEAS and went on to become college graduates and dedicated professionals, Mercelena Vasquez, envisioned a way to continue this mission beyond high school. This vision gave rise to the IDEAS Alumni Association, which is now led by the key founding members who now serve on its board.
I.A.A. continues to empower both alumni and current high school students by connecting them with essential resources, professional mentorship, and meaningful opportunities for professional and personal growth.
In early 2025, the IDEAS Alumni Association proudly became an official nonprofit organization, marking an important step in expanding its reach and impact. In this way, the legacy of IDEAS lives in students and allies united by the values of education, leadership, and community service
